Holcim taps Blueleaf for renewable energy

LISTED cement manufacturer Holcim Philippines Inc. inked a 20-year deal with renewable energy company, Blueleaf Energy, for the provision of solar power to its Bulacan and La Union plants.In a disclosure on Friday, Holcim said they signed the power purchase agreement with Blueleaf Energy on November 16.Holcim noted that under the agreement, Blueleaf will "finance, build, operate and maintain solar energy facilities in Norzagaray, Bulacan and Bacnotan, La Union."The facilities will have a combined capacity of 29-megawatt (MW) peak and an annual generation of more than 50 gigawatt hours (GWh) that will supply up to 15 percent of the plants' energy requirements.The company said the energy facilities are eyed to be finished by 2024."Reducing the carbon footprint of our operations is one of our key sustainability commitments. This year, we have made great progress by stepping up production of blended cements and replacing coal with alternative fuels. Shifting to renewable solar energy will help us further improve as an environment steward and a partner in building progress in the country sustainably," Holcim Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Adrian was quoted as saying.Holcim said the partnership marks its "transition to sustainable cleaner energy for cement production" and is expected to reduce Holcim's power costs and carbon footprint."We are pleased to continue to build our strong track record in delivering world-class clean energy solutions in the region and supporting large multinational companies like Holcim," Blueleaf Energy CEO Raghuram Natarajan said."With our credentials of developing and operating over 2 GW of projects, of which more than 250 MW in the Philippines, this partnership also underscores our strong capability to support corporates in Asia in achieving their clean energy ambitions," Natarajan continued.Holcim netted P2.3 billion in the first nine months of the year, a 124-percent surge from P1.03 billion year on year.
