Curse of the Cinderella embargo dogs public information

Image
We need to talk about a pestilence that causes an itch in Irish journalism, especially in reportage of large companies and State organisations. I refer to publication embargoes, which are endemic. Community transmission of them is currently way too high. We need a circuit breaker to stop the news agenda being overly manipulated by public relations. Embargoes are agreements between journalists and sources, made without the knowledge of readers or viewers, to delay publishing a story until a specific day or time. “We promise not to reveal your news until you say so.” It is one of those navel-gazing media issues that ought to pass by ordinary readers. The truth is that the now virus-like prevalence of embargoes in journalism, and the supine manner in which they are accepted, skews the flow of media content to readers and viewers every day, to the benefit of major organisations. Europe’s telecoms giants eye deals – but is it too late to beat private equity?

Image
Europe’s biggest telecommunications companies are finally abandoning their deal-making hesitancy. They may be too late to beat the kingpins of private equity. KKR and Co has proposed a €10.8 billion buyout of Telecom Italia in what would be one of the biggest private equity takeovers of a phone company ever. It would eclipse Warburg Pincus and Apax Partners’s buyout of T-Mobile Netherlands in September or the 2020 take-private of Spain’s Masmovil. Carriers have been wary of embarking on transactions with each other since 2016, when CK Hutchison Holdings was blocked by regulators from buying the UK division of Telefonica. But private equity firms waded into the sector, driven by low interest rates and drawn by digital infrastructure’s stable, long-term returns. And no target seems off-limits. EQT and KKR have tested the defenses of Holland’s KPN, and speculation occasionally surfaces about even bigger prey like Vodafone Group. For the phone companies, the mood music in Brussels may have...

‘Exam answers in 30 minutes’: Colleges struggle against contract cheating

Image
Not so long ago the biggest threat to academic integrity on campus was plagiarism. These days, contract cheating services – which provide essays and assignments to order – are emerging as the biggest risk, magnified by the pandemic and shift to remote learning. “It’s a huge problem,” says Megan O’Connor, vice-president for academic affairs with the Union of Students of Ireland (USI). “On campus, the posters advertising these services are going up faster than they can be taken down. Students are being targeted on social media... Anyone who thinks there isn’t an issue doesn’t realise that it’s right under their nose,” she says. The main activity of contract cheating services is providing paid-for assignments, ranging from coursework to open-book exam questions Alarmed by the risk to academic integrity, the Irish watchdog for standards in education, Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), has flagged more than 80 websites which allow students to cheat in online exams or assessments. Uni...
