Commentary: Europe’s recent electricity price surge inevitable if it wants green energy

We won't have electric airplanes until battery tech improves

Today’s commercial airliners are not exactly fuel efficient. The average 747, for example, burns through a gallon of kerosene-based fuel every second that it flies. And with 8.2 billion people expected to take to the skies annually by 2037, carbon-free alternatives to Jet A-1 will be necessary in order to offset the industry’s impact on global warming. We are nearing the age of electric airplanes.Pioneering researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs have been working on the dream of electrified flight since the latter part of the 19th century when heavy lead-acid batteries were loaded onto early airships to power their propellers. We’ve also seen a number of, ahem, novel means of powering aircraft while in-flight throughout the years, from conductive tethers stretching back down to the ground to solar panels to microwave energy transmission but it wasn’t until the advent of relatively more power-dense Nickel-cadmium (NiCad) battery technology that human-scale free-flying electric planes...

RT-PCR requirement for travelers remains

ZAMBOANGA CITY: The City Health Office (CHO) on Thursday rejected a proposal by local lawmakers to ease travel restrictions here by allowing fully vaccinated persons to enter Zamboanga without reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) requirement.Councilman John Dalipe passed a resolution asking the local Covid task force to exempt fully vaccinated individuals from the mandatory RT-PCR test when entering the city.In a statement released, the CHO said it acknowledges the intent of the Sangguniang Panlungsod in passing the resolution, but the high number of Covid-19 cases here and the public health prevent it from easing the regulation set by the local government."We, in the medical sector, likewise would very much want to write this off from the requirement list for travelers to ease our burdens and pave way for lesser travel restrictions. However, we take into consideration the general welfare of the people of Zamboanga, and that of the neighboring provinces and cit...

TG4’s Alan Esslemont: ‘We should have equal status with RTÉ if Irish is to flourish’

Image
“It’s only since the pandemic and only since the new Minister that I’ve really been able to say what I think,” says Alan Esslemont, ard stiúrthóir (director general) of TG4. What he thinks is that TG4 is trapped in “the wrong paradigm” and the Irish language can’t afford for it to remain there. Recent financial injections, such as the €4.2 million Budget 2022 boost that brings the broadcaster’s annual exchequer funding to €44.9 million, though gratefully received, are ultimately “increments”, he says, and won’t lift TG4 out of “the paradigm of second- or third-class resources” that dictated the terms of its on-air birth as Teilifís na Gaeilge (TnaG) on October 31st, 1996. This Halloween, TG4 is celebrating its 25th birthday by broadcasting traditional music awards event Gradam Ceoil, while in select cinemas, there’s a more uncommon sight: a predominantly Irish-language film, the TG4-backed Famine thriller Arracht, is on its third week of release. For his part, Esslemont wants to mark t...

Utilising demand flexibility in electricity distribution networks

Image
The transition to sustainable energy sources like wind and solar and the introduction of electric vehicles and heat pumps are putting a growing strain on our electricity distribution networks. To prevent overloading and reinforcing the network, which is costly and time-consuming, regulators are increasingly looking to new and flexible ways of controlling demand. Ph.D. researcher Rik Fonteijn of the department of Electrical Engineering has developed practical tools that can help distribution system operators utilize demand flexibility in their daily operations.
